The word trauma comes from the Greek word for wound. It is a term modern people apply to our ancient, innate capacity to temporarily override overwhelming aspects of the human experience. This happens automatically and unconsciously to keep us safe, to maintain a sense of coherence and predictability, to dampen the terror of feeling lost, disconnected, or out of control.
While this ability is an amazing and beautiful survival adaptation – perhaps especially for children – it comes with a cost. When experience is not fully felt, expressed, and witnessed, its energy remains trapped in the body, where it creates rigid mental and physical patterns that can impact our health and severely limit our enjoyment of life.
Somatic Experiencing offers a way of slowing down, tuning in, and allowing this energy to arise and complete its course of action. In this way the traumatic sense of being stuck is transformed into profound presence, resilience, flexibility, and the capacity to fully be with life’s challenges and joys.
