Psychedelic Integration

Sweet are the uses of adversity
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head.

– Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act 2 Scene 1

Marijuana, LSD, Psilocybin, DMT
They all changed the way I see
But love’s the only thing that ever saved my life.
– Sturgill Simpson, “Turtles All the Way Down”

One thing my journey has taught me is how little I know. That said, I humbly offer this model of psychedelic integration.

[Note: for a more personal, down-to-earth version of this click here.]

In my experience, psychedelic tools can facilitate integration at three levels:

  1. Personal integration of stuck, stagnant energy: processing old pain (“trauma”), restoring flow and aliveness.

  2. Broader functional integration in one’s personal, individual way of being: rebalancing the relationship of mind/body, left/right brain hemispheres, primary/secondary consciousness, ego/higher self.

  3. Integration of this personal self with the broader context, the life we are co-creating: our past selves, current relationships, community, work, culture, nature, the cycle of birth and death, the mystery of the universe.

Integration is learning, which is a transformation in who we think we are and what we know is true. Such deep learning can be destabilizing, and may not be fully possible without support: someone to hold on…so you can let go.
